Interactive Fiction

Nick Montfort, "Twisty Little Passages" (2003), Chapters 5 - 8

Although the book is subtitled "An approach to Interactive Fiction", it is actually for the most part a historical overview. Of the seven full-length chapters (chapter 8 is much shorter), five are almost entirely historical. This doesn't mean that it's just a bunch of dates: Montfort mixes the dry facts of history with literary criticism and judgement to create an interesting and enlightening discussion. But he is not, in chapters 3 through 7, especially concerned with theory.
