In Shades, every player takes control of a fictional character caught in a bizarre parody of life. Your body died, possibly long ago, but your mind merely retreated in a temporary unconsciousness. Now you have returned as a shade, a being without corporeal form, invisible to living human beings, but able to perceive the material world. You have little sense of self, and no idea of who you are, why you are dead, in what place you find yourself. But many memories lurk beneath the surface of your mind, waiting only for the most tiny of prods before vehemently bursting forth. These memories tell the tragic tale of your terrible fate, of the pain you suffered and inflicted; yet they may also contain the key to appeasement and redemption.

Stalin's Story

It is 1928, and Stalin has retreated to his personal chambers. In the world outside, his agricultural reforms have been unsuccessful, leading to a food crisis. He doesn’t want to hear a word about that. The peasants are hiding the scarce food from the state collectors, and it is only at gunpoint that they are ‘willing’ to give it up. But Stalin doesn’t want to hear a word about that either.

Vampires

This is a roleplaying game about vampires. Not about vampires engaged in intricate plots concerning ancient works of art and forbidden knowledge. Not about vampires that are addicted to blood for its own sake, and constantly agonise about the immorality of drinking it. Not about vampires who seek to rescue their soul from damnation, or wish to achieve the eternal rest denied to them.

In this game, vampires are constantly engaged in a violent physical struggle for power, respect and security. To avoid being a beaten-up loser, you need blood. You get blood by biting women you are intimate with. ‘Intimate’, as in ‘love’. Only for you, it’s not love anymore – for you, it’s ruthless exploitation. The question is: can you exploit enough women to survive?
